On the 24th August 2011 the Federal member for Leichardt, Warren Entsch, put forward a private members bill to the House of Representatives. The Torres Strait Islands Sea Wall bill was passed by both sides of parliament.
The bill will ensure that the federal government provides $22 million for sea wall construction in the Torres Strait.
Torres Strait Islanders have been asking for funding for sea walls for over five years.
